Dear sir/madam

I would like to find out whether you have much information on Diepsloot Chamber Of Commerce. I would like to find a way to network with the traders in mainly Diepsloot area. We are currently working on a project that focuses on the Base Of The Pyramid and the informal channels. We would like to know more and learn more, with the intention of fine tuning our distribution methods into this channel.

Hi Cleo
The emphasis of the article is to find out about the exhibition organiser rather than focusing on who the other exhibitors are....
I would also be very wary of a new event organiser who wants to charge the same types of prices as what would be paid for an established expo. A business will pay at least R20 000 to exhibit at one of these big shows - and for R20k+ you can bet your bottom dollar that I want to at least know that the person/company organising the exhibition is going to give me something for that money.
A small business absolutely does NOT have R20k to throw away on someone who is experimenting.... The organiser has a responsibility to their exhibitors!
So I always recommend that anyone starting in this business, starts with something a little smaller and proves that they know what they are doing - holding a well-run exhibition is a massive task requiring really good organisational skills and isn't for everyone.
Having had some organising experience previously (eg with a cultural show, or have done events for Junior Chamber or Toastmasters or even a school play) gives you a history to build on.
I have recently come across an example of an event which I would not sponsor - it is for an entrepreneurs week. It is obvious that it is the first time that this is being run. The brochure and website are full of basic spelling errors. They say that they expect 1250 attendees - yet the venue can hold about 200 for the main sessions (so even if they got in a completely new set of people for each of the four days of the event, they would only have 800 people). As for the speakers - government departments (which I don't feel that I should have to pay to hear them tell me what they do) and general inspirational (nice but not really entrepreneurship up-skilling).
Yet, despite that there are no lesser price exhibitor spaces offered - you have the choice of the R100 000 Gold sponsorship and the R50 00 silver sponsorship. You could though also sponsor things such as gift bags - the smallest cost for that would be R7000. (R7k for a few hundred people to see you logo on a bag - not likely.)
Unfortunately, as a small business owner I would not sponsor (take part in) this as I think they will only get about 250 to 350 paying attendees (of course SEDA or one of the government funded agencies will probably land up paying for a few hundred more people so that the place looks busy). But the point here is - would a small business get much from this target market then? If the delegates can't afford the minor cost of attendance (less than R500 a day which is excellent), then could they afford to buy my business' product?
This type of event basically makes the organiser very wealthy on money given to them by the government.
Remember that the owner of a small business exhibits because they need to reach potential customers. To do so they need to know that the exhibitor will be providing them with targeted potential customers and roughly of the quantity that they have promised - or else they are wasting their hard-earned cash. And THAT is no easy task as any experienced event organiser will tell.
Even I (with many, many years of organising all sorts of events and a management background) would start an exhibition small and grow it as it went along.... Start with something that you can manage and prove yourself.

Pity Joy that these questions you advising clients to ask have no room for entrepreneurs who are just starting out with their exhibitions. SA Government is trying so much to instill entrepreunership/ give support to SMME's but its mindsets like these that live no room for new coming business. Your reference is based on past events, so what should new exhibitors say?
If one is a new exhibition organiser are you suggesting Exhibitors shouldnt support them? Everything has a beginning, before every history, there is a beginning.
